Tinnitus and Stem Cells

Tinnitus is the perception of sound when no external sound is present. It is a symptom of many underlying conditions, including hearing loss, head or neck trauma, Meniere’s disease, brain tumors, and side effects from certain medications. Tinnitus can also be a result of changes in the way the brain processes sound. There is no cure for tinnitus, but there are treatments that can help lessen the symptoms. One such treatment is the use of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). MSCs are a type of adult stem cell that can be found in many tissues, including the bone marrow, adipose tissue, and umbilical cord. These cells have the ability to differentiate into many different cell types, including osteoblasts, chondrocytes, and adipocytes. MSCs have been shown to be effective in the treatment of tinnitus in animal models. In one study, MSCs were injected into the cochlea of rats with tinnitus. The rats receiving MSCs showed a significant decrease in tinnitus symptoms, compared to those that did not receive MSCs. The mechanism by which MSCs exert their therapeutic effect in tinnitus is not fully understood. However, it is thought that MSCs may help to reduce inflammation and promote the regeneration of damaged cells. In addition, MSCs produce factors that can help to protect cells from damage. MSCs are a promising treatment for tinnitus, but more research is needed to determine their safety and efficacy in humans. If proven to be effective, MSCs could provide a much-needed treatment option for the millions of people affected by this condition.
