Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) and Stem Cells

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a progressive kidney disorder that causes multiple cysts to form in the kidneys. PKD cysts can grow very large and can eventually cause kidney failure. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a type of adult stem cell that can be found in many tissues, including the bone marrow. MSCs have the ability to differentiate into a variety of cell types, including kidney cells. Recent studies have shown that MSCs can be used to treat PKD. In one study, MSCs were injected into the kidneys of rats with PKD. The MSCs migrated to the kidney cysts and differentiated into kidney cells. The MSCs helped to reduce the size of the cysts and improved kidney function. Another study found that MSCs could be used to treat PKD in humans. In this study, MSCs were injected into the kidneys of patients with PKD. The MSCs migrated to the kidney cysts and differentiated into kidney cells. The MSCs helped to reduce the size of the cysts and improved kidney function. These studies suggest that MSC therapy may be a promising treatment for PKD.
