Cervical Disc Herniations (CDH) and Stem Cells

Cervical disc herniations (CDH) are a common source of neck pain and disability. Although many people with CDH experience only mild symptoms, some people can develop chronic pain and disability. In severe cases, CDH can lead to paralysis. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a type of adult stem cell that can be found in many tissues, including the bone marrow. MSCs have the ability to differentiate into a variety of cell types, including bone, cartilage, and fat cells. MSCs have been shown to be effective in the treatment of CDH. In a small study, MSCs were injected into the herniated disc of eight patients with CDH. The patients experienced a significant reduction in pain and disability. MSCs are a promising treatment for CDH. However, larger and more long-term studies are needed to confirm the safety and effectiveness of this treatment.

The use of MSCs for the treatment of neck pain is still in the early stages of research, but there is already a great deal of promising data to suggest that this may be a effective treatment option. One study published in the Journal of Neurosurgery in 2014 found that the injection of MSCs into the necks of rats with induced neck pain resulted in a significant reduction in pain and inflammation. This study also found that the MSCs were able to promote the regeneration of damaged nerve tissue. Another study, published in the journal Spine in 2016, found that the injection of MSCs into the necks of rats with induced neck pain resulted in a significant reduction in pain and an increase in the regeneration of damaged intervertebral discs. This study also found that the MSCs were able to promote the regeneration of damaged nerve tissue. Overall, the current data suggests that the use of MSCs for the treatment of neck pain is a promising option. However, more research is needed in order to determine the safety and efficacy of this treatment.
