Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) Help Tendon and Ligament Tears

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a type of adult stem cell that can be found throughout the body. MSCs have the ability to differentiate into a number of different cell types, including: osteoblasts (bone cells), chondrocytes (cartilage cells), myocytes (muscle cells), and adipocytes (fat cells). MSCs can also be induced to become neural cells. MSCs were first isolated from bone marrow in the early 1970s, and since then, they have been isolated from a number of different tissues, including: adipose tissue, umbilical cord blood, and even tooth pulp. MSCs are a promising cell type for the treatment of a number of different diseases and conditions, due to their ability to differentiate into multiple cell types and their ability to self-renew. One of the most promising applications of MSCs is in the treatment of ligament and tendon injuries. MSCs have been shown to promote the regeneration of damaged ligaments and tendons. In a study published in 2009, MSCs were injected into the site of a torn Achilles tendon in rats. The rats that received the MSCs showed a significant decrease in the size of their tendon injury and an increase in the number of new blood vessels at the injury site. In another study, published in 2010, MSCs were injected into the site of a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in rabbits. The rabbits that received the MSCs showed a significant decrease in the size of their ACL injury and an increase in the number of new blood vessels at the injury site. MSCs have also been shown to promote the regeneration of damaged cartilage. In a study published in 2008, MSCs were injected into the site of a cartilage injury in rats. The rats that received the MSCs showed a significant decrease in the size of their cartilage injury and an increase in the number of new blood vessels at the injury site. MSCs are a promising cell type for the treatment of ligament and tendon injuries, due to their ability to promote the regeneration of damaged tissue.
